The European Commission has established a Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, bringing together Member State experts, EU & international bodies and all actors across the food value chain including NGOs. The Platform will give support to define the measures needed to achieve SDG 12.3 by facilitating inter-sector co-operation, sharing best practices and results, and evaluating progress made over time.

The REFRESH team presented a poster on assessing life cycle impacts of food waste at the Recy&DepoTech conference last week in Leoben, Austria. This bi-annual conference is one of the most important waste conferences in German-speaking areas and had more than 500 participants. The conference equally addresses researchers and practitioners.

Food Matters Live is a cross-sector event for the food and drink industry, retailers, foodservice providers, government and people in the nutrition field, to enable collaboration and innovation to support a sustainable food landscape for the future.

Seeds&Chips is the International Summit dedicated to food innovation from farm to fork, where food and technology meet. Hundreds of startups, companies in food and tech, investors, thought leaders and policymakers come together to share content and visions, projects and experiences — innovating the food system is not just an opportunity.

Seeds&Chips is four days of exhibition, conferences/panel discussions, business matching and a hackathon, pitches and awards with the protagonists of Food Tech, Ag Tech and the “Internet of Food.”

REFRESH business engagement gets off the ground. The third meeting of the German Pilot Working Platform (PWP) took place on 06/10/2016 at the CSCP’s premises in Wuppertal. Representatives from retail, the food industry, ministries at federal and national level as well as civil society organizations agreed upon five priority topics to tackle with a number of collaborative projects from 2017 on.

REFRESH, a European project on food waste, has launched its Food Waste Solution Contest and is looking for the freshest ideas to tackle food waste across Europe. The contest aims to highlight and support solutions to food waste and food packaging waste at any part(s) of the food chain.

The REFRESH project has evaluated the key EU waste streams having significant environmental impact. Over 290 waste streams were identified, scored and reviewed to produce a list of priority waste streams for further study. The list includes brewers’ spent grains, oil press cake and meat & dairy side-streams such as slaughter by-products and whey, as well as apple pomace, orange peel and tomato pomace.

The EU launched the Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste (FLW) that aims to support the EU and its Member States in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 12.3 to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chain.

Los días 7 y 8 de Septiembre 2016 tuvo lugar en la sede de CREDA-UPC-IRTA, en la ESAB de Castelldefels, España, el segundo encuentro europeo del proyecto EU REFRESH, con el objetivo de discutir el progreso del proyecto y definir conjuntamente futuras acciones contra el desperdicio alimentario.

On July 5th 2016 a workshop on Food Waste Recovery was held in Vienna. Nicole Unger gave a presentation on the role of food waste recovery in a circular economy. The presentation covered the broad context of circular economy and food waste. The work of the REFRESH project was also presented.
