In this short video, REFRESH ESPAÑA, the Spanish Pilot Working Platform of REFRESH, explains the issue of food waste and how the project worked to combat this widespread and difficult problem.
The REFRESH Pilot Working Platform in Spain brought together a great variety of organizations, ranging from primary production and consumer associations to public administrations as for instance: FIAB, ASEDAS, FCAC, AECOC, HISPACOOP, Mercabarna, ARC, AMB, PAA, ADICAE, Espigoladors and Barcelona Food Bank. These stakeholders shared their visions about the problem and potential solutions and developed a Framework for Action for reducing food waste in Spain. The Pilot Working Platform defined the food waste hot spots in Spain and selected relevant project proposals to test food waste reduction measures.

This one-page infographic first contextualizes the issue of food waste, and then presents the steps involved in the design of voluntary agreements, the main tools employed by the REFRESH Spanish Pilot Working Platform toward minimizing food waste along value chains.
A suite of case studies from across the EU, demonstrating actions to reduce food losses and waste.
A voluntary agreement is a proven method for tackling food waste. By working together to achieve collective goals, organisations can collaborate and deliver change in the most efficient, effective way. Using practical examples from the REFRESH national programs, as well as WRAP’s UK success including Courtauld 2025, this guide outlines the steps necessary for building successful voluntary agreements.
On 11 December 2018 the 4th meeting of the Spanish REFRESH Platform was held at the headquarters of CREDA-UPC-IRTA in Barcelona. Taking into account that there are 6 months left until the end of the project, the most important results of the project at European level were presented and the evolution of the platform, that developed 30 initiatives in 2017, was evaluated.
REFRESH is pleased to announce that online registration is now available for the Food loss and waste reduction and management course that we have co-created with the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ-CIHEAM) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
The REFRESH Spanish Platform has been cooperating with members on food waste reducing actions since 2016. Since then, pilot projects looking at whole supply chains, consumer acceptance studies, and food waste in hospitality have been carried out, alongside baselining and multiple meetings to share good practice and collaborate on open questions.
The progress of the Refresh project and the latest initiatives of the members of the Platform were presented, the next steps to be followed in the coming months were also discussed. We enjoyed both an interesting and entertaining program.
In July 2017, REFRESH reached out to consumers in its four pilot countries (The Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Hungary) to complete a survey on food and drink products. The purpose of the research is to investigate different contents and formats of on-pack information and their effect on consumer understanding and food waste behaviours in these four EU member states. The results of the survey will be disseminated towards the end of 2017.
As a Spanish Refresh platform’s pilot project, Gastrofira, the catering service at Fira Barcelona, is collaborating with CREDA-UPC-IRTA to reduce the amount of food waste generated through their activities.
Gastrofira is the catering service of “Feria de Barcelona”, one of the most important European trade fair organisations. They have joined the Refresh platform, and specifically Spain’s first pilot project, as a way to reduce their food waste.
With the signing of the Framework for Action, the Spanish signatories commit to a nonbinding agreement to contribute to reduce food waste in the areas most relevant to them in the food chain. Through the Framework for Action it is aimed to make a contribution to achieving the SDG’s target 12.3 by halving the per capita food waste by 2030.
In early 2017 the first actIvity of the pilot project "Gastrofira" has been completed. Food waste generated by the catering service of Feria de Barcelona (trade fair organisation) was quantified during an international event. Food waste data from kitchen and dining room has been gathered in order to establish a baseline for upcoming events’ reduction interventions.
February 2017, 16 organizations signed the Spanish REFRESH Platform Framework for Action showing their commitment to fight against food waste over the next 2 years.
On September 22, 2016, the second meeting of the steering committee of the Spanish national platform to fight against food waste in the context of the EU REFRESH project took place at the headquarters of CREDA-UPC-IRTA in UPC’s Baix Llobregat Campus in Castelldefels (Barcelona). Representatives of stakeholders of the food chain met to agree on a Framework for Action to set up their collective engagement of working to reduce or prevent food waste.
On March 2, 2016, the first REFRESH meeting to develop a Framework for Action for reducing food waste in Spain took place in Barcelona. Stakeholders interested in tackling food waste at national level got together to share their visions about the problem and potential solutions. The meeting developed the basis for future collaborative work within the Pilot Working Platform.
