A recent article in the Spanish "digitalmagazine" analyzes the complexity of the causes and solutions to food waste in Europe. The article features an interview of David Rogers, International Projects Manager of WRAP, for their important work in analyzing food waste in Britain and promoting the prevention of waste and better use of food resources.
Representatives from other member organizations of the Spanish Refresh platform were also interviewed. Mireia Barba, from the social enterprise Espigoladors, highlights their work in redistributing waste generated in farms to nonprofit social entities, as well as giving a new value to some of those products by turning them into jams, soups, etc… which are sold under the ‘Es-Imperfect’ brand.
As for Nùria Pedraza and David Esteller, from the business association AECOC, they are developing an anti-food waste project between their partners, by helping them to quantify their own waste, and to apply measures to reduce it, for example through donations.
Lastly, Miguel Blanco, general secretary of the Producer’s Association COAG, argues that the globalized and speculative agricultural market is the cause for the current levels of food waste and indicates that farmers are working on making their crops more efficient and avdocating for a production model based on proximity and seasonality.
The article also mentions initiatives from other members of the Refresh platform, such as Prosalus, Nutrition Without Borders / Nutrició Sense Fronteres y la Plataforma Aprovechemos los Alimentos.
