The final REFRESH conference that took place on May 10, 2019 in the Disseny Hub Barcelona brought together 150 participants from all across Europe, China, Australia and the US to present and discuss innovative ideas for food waste reduction and valorisation options across the whole supply chain.

The final REFRESH workshop discussed options and recommendations to integrate policies for food waste in the broader contexts of sustainable food systems and the Circular Economy. Building on the results created within the REFRESH project, the workshop brought together policy makers and experts from research, NGOs and businesses to discuss EU policy options that go beyond efforts to reduce food waste and includes other sustainability aspects such as health and social impacts.

El 11 de diciembre de 2018 se celebró el 4º encuentro de la Plataforma REFRESH española en la sede de CREDA-UPC-IRTA en Barcelona. Teniendo en cuenta que quedan 6 meses para el final del proyecto, se presentaron los resultados más importantes del proyecto a nivel europeo y se hizo una evaluación de la evolución de la plataforma, que desarrolló 30 iniciativas en 2017.

On 11 December 2018 the 4th meeting of the Spanish REFRESH Platform was held at the headquarters of CREDA-UPC-IRTA in Barcelona. Taking into account that there are 6 months left until the end of the project, the most important results of the project at European level were presented and the evolution of the platform, that developed 30 initiatives in 2017, was evaluated.

How do we together reduce food waste and what are the challenges and needs of the different players? This was the question that engaged the almost 80 participants under the "Challenge Workshop on Food Waste " held at the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) Agrifood and Bioscience, Gothenburg, Sweden on September 27. The workshop resulted in the identification of 48 concrete activities.

The international symposium "Food Safety in the EU: Maintaining High Standards and Ensuring Transparency of Information" on food safety, agriculture policy and transparency of information to consumers is hold on January 29, 2019 in Brussels, Belgium.

The REFRESH Community of Experts (CoE) is a knowledge-sharing platform which seeks to promote best practice, foster discussions and improve stakeholder engagement. The website compiles initiatives in food waste prevention and reduction, which are categorised and tagged for easy user accessibility. At the same time, the website facilitates dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders.

The Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI) will host its 1st GHI World Congress on Food Safety and Security in Leiden, The Netherlands on 24 - 28 March 2019.

The Congress FOOD 2030: Towards sustainable agri-food systems will be held on 5-6 September 2018, as one of the major events to mark the 200th anniversary of the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart. It will bring together experts, researchers and stakeholders from various disciplines with diverse experiences related to food systems. The congress’ aim is to raise awareness and openly discuss the European policy process of FOOD 2030 at the national level.

This brochure describes the interim results of the REFRESH (Resource Efficient Food and dRink for the Entire Supply cHain) project through May 2018. REFRESH’s research into the behaviours, economics, and relationships that lead to food waste will inform future recommendations for efficient and versatile solutions to food waste at all levels of production.
