A Sino-Nordic Seminar on Sustainable Food Systems and Food Waste was held on January 13-14, 2018, in Shanghai, China. Over 40 active researchers and stakeholders from the Nordic countries and China in the field of sustainable food systems and food waste shared experience and discussed potential directions of collaboration.

Food losses and food waste (FLW) has become a worldwide concern in recent years and is widely identified as a key barrier to global sustainability. Consequently, reduction of FLW emerges as a priority on the global and national political agenda. Nordic countries are frontrunner in food waste reduction and related research. The rising food waste in China deserves a closer look due to its significant impact on the global food market, resources use, and emissions. In recent years, consumer food waste increases rapidly and repeatedly pops up in public debates on food security, human health, and waste management in China. Thus, there are huge potentials for China to learn from the experience of food waste research and reduction in the Nordic countries. As such, the seminar provided a good opportunity and space for participants to share knowledge, experience and networks-building among stakeholders.

The seminar included four complementing sessions: (1) Food waste quantification and management (including a panel discussion on “Towards SDG 12.3: Nordic vs China”); (2) Sustainable food production and consumption; (3) Food-energy-water nexus; and (4) Sustainable nutrient management. Over 20 speakers presented their research results and ongoing work that related to sustainable food systems.

The seminar has attracted over 40 researchers, practitioners, governmental agencies, and NGO representative. REFRESH Partner Gang Liu from University of Southern Denmark co-organized the seminar and a few other REFRESH partners (i.e., RISE Sweden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and IVL Beijing) attended the seminar. This seminar was funded and hosted by the Nordic Centre in Shanghai, China and Fudan University.
