With focuses on Voluntary Agreements, animal feed, and consumer behaviour

Interactive REFRESH working groups in 2018 and 2019 provide a space for stakeholders to discuss policy options to reduce food waste. Three working groups had specific policy focuses: voluntary agreements, animal feed, and consumer behaviour. A final workshop provided an overview of the policy outcomes from the entire REFRESH project.

Final Policy Recommendations Workshop

The final REFRESH workshop discussed policy options and recommendations to integrate policies for food waste in the broader contexts of sustainable food policies and the Circular Economy. Building on the results created within the REFRESH project we brought together policy makers and experts from research, NGOs and businesses to discuss policy options for EU policies.

Consumer Behaviour Working Group

REFRESH has uncovered insights on innovative approaches to achieve real consumer behaviour change related to food waste, based on empirical consumer behaviour research. During the Consumer Behaviour working group, REFRESH researchers and stakeholders discussed evidence-based recommendations to design more effective policy interventions, with a particular focus on public campaigns.

Animal Feed Working Group

Using heat-treated meat-containing surplus food as pig and chicken feed is an innovative potential solution for reducing food waste. Policy measures supporting these initiatives will be discussed during the Animal Feed working group, which will also feature information and guidance about the related business case.

Voluntary Agreements Working Group

Voluntary Agreements between stakeholders across the food value chain are considered key policy approaches to address the issue of food waste throughout food supply chains. During this working group, interactive discussions sessions with Member State representatives will consider the use of Voluntary Agreements as a policy instrument for more sustainable food systems.
