REFRESH action in China is picking up speed, including research, a policy proposal, preparation of the national platform, funding applications, and kick-off conference preparation.
Research and policy on food waste in China: There is already one report on the Chinese food waste situation, as well as some data on the state of food waste in restaurants and school. A group led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has conducted research studies on food waste in restaurants in 4 pilot cities and a short research highlight on food waste in schools. Based on these results, a summary report on a preview of the state of food waste in China has been completed together with WWF. The reports are expected to be available at the end of 2016. Meanwhile, a policy proposal on school food waste to top leadership in China has received very positive comments and triggered a national regulation on food waste in school lunch programmes.
Chinese REFRESH conference: A conference to kick off REFRESH in China is planned on 26th of November in Beijing. The goal of the up-coming conference is to raise awareness on food waste among Chinese societal actors and authorities, integrate multiple stakeholders in dialogue, obtain commitments for action on food waste, and trigger youth education programs.
Chinese Pilot Working Platform: with the continuous efforts from REFRESH China team (CAS, ACEF, IVL China team), the PWP is under preparation. The groundwork for the PWP will be laid at the conference in November.
Applications for funding: Proposals have been prepared to raise financial support for Chinese actions in REFRESH. One application to the "Regional Asia Environment Conference Support Programme", funded by the Government of Sweden through the Swedish Environmental Institute Asian Division, has been successful, and an application to MOST is waiting for results.
