In September 2018, professionals from business, science, non-governmental and international organizations gathered in Beijing for the Food Waste Reduction-Action in China forum to advocate green consumption awareness and reduction in food waste.

The head of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute China Division Ms. GAO Si presented on the institute’s plans to introduce advanced technologies, methods and tools on food waste reduction and provide more convenience for stakeholders to connect directly to the food waste reduction network in Asia, and even in Europe.

Further, the China Household Electrical Appliances Research Institute (CHEARI) vice director QU Zongfeng, FAO chief representative Vincent Martin, Sweden's ambassador to China Anna Lindstedt and head of China Chain Store & Franchise Association (CCFA) Pei Liang exchanged ideas and discussed plans and ongoing process for an improvement in the food supply chain and a change in consumer behavior. Especially, the importance of cross-border cooperation between different sectors was pointed out.

Topics and actions discussed in this forum aim to achieve the SDG 12.3 of halving food waste per capita in the retail and consumer sectors and reducing food losses in the production and supply chain.

The Food Waste Reduction China Action Platform is a partnership initiated by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, CCFA and CHEARI, guided by FAO, UNEP ‘Think, Eat, Save’, and supported by REFRESH, in the aim of supporting China to achieve SDG 12.3.
