The EU-funded project Strategies to Reduce Food Waste in Central Europe (STREFOWA) will be hosting its second of five Food Waste Hackathons in Poland June 23-25.

By combining a variety of experienced individuals in fields ranging from food activism to game design, hackathons encourage innovation to find robust software solutions to food waste. The weekend will focus on answering three main questions:

  1. How can we support a system for separate collection of organic waste in households?
  2. How can we help food banks in Poland save more food from being wasted and distribute it to people in need?
  3. How can apps help reduce food waste in Poland?

The event will involve small teams tackling challenges presented by the hosts to develop ideas the ways an app could reduce food waste. By combining a variety of experienced individuals in fields ranging from food activism to game design, this hackathon will encourage innovation to find robust software solutions to food waste. Following two days of teamwork and app design, teams will be judged on the potential impact, the thoughtfulness, and the ease of use of their suggestions or apps in reducing food waste.
