A contest for raising awareness about food waste is taking place in China. It challenges participants to submit images or videos describing new ways to treat food waste, investigate the phenomenon and/or offer solutions for better promoting awareness on the issue. It builds on the previous REFRESH contest carried out in Europe.

The contest is hosted by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute (China) as well as the ACEF, UN Environment, CAS, and UN FAO and supported by REFRESH and the Shanghai Foundation, among others. The online submissions are to be accompanied by a written description of the concept.

The Chinese contest was promoted on online and Wechat news circuits as well as through a number of promotion seminars in different Chinese cities. The promotion campaign received a warm welcome at schools and produced several media reports. The target group is primarily students, and prizes include a place at the Swedish summer camp, a REFRESH- and UN-signed certificate, product exhibition at national and international seminars, and the solution being implemented at venues in Shanghai.
